Mark Kaye

Mark KayeI Automate Everything

Designing reliable, automated systems that scale — passionate about observability and continuous improvement.

About Me

I'm an AI-first and opinionated Automation Architect with over 2 decades of experience designing and implementing systems that run themselves. My career has spanned DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, and large-scale digital transformation — all built around one principle: if it can be automated, it should be — even if that means automating myself out of the job.

I've delivered automation strategies for enterprises across logistics, retail, and government, helping teams move from fragile infrastructure to resilient, self-healing systems. My expertise covers cloud architecture, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and observability — everything that keeps modern platforms reliable and scalable.

What drives me is solving complex operational problems through elegant automation. I love turning repetitive processes into efficient, auditable systems that free people to focus on innovation instead of firefighting.

When I'm not building automation frameworks or optimising deployments for some of the world's largest organisations, you'll usually find me experimenting with emerging AI and automation technologies — from AI-driven reliability to humanoid robotics — and exploring how they can redefine the future of work.

I built a Wi-Fi-enabled thermometer for my daughter’s aquarium — Raspberry Pi Zero, Prometheus, Grafana… naturally 🐟🐠🐡

Oh, and I'm a motorsport, car and motorcycle guy. Sorry, not sorry 🏍️💨 🏎️💨

Recent Projects

Ephemeral Infrastructure as Code Platform

Architected and developed a commercial SaaS solution that automated the provisioning of ephemeral test environments and execution of Selenium-based test suites on demand. The Terraform-driven platform enabled customers to schedule and run fully automated tests against their applications, delivering scalable, repeatable, and cost-efficient testing as a service.

Technologies:

AWSEKSKubernetesDockerTerraformTerraform CloudGitHub ActionsSelenium

Role: Lead Architect

Key Wins:

  • Reduced infrastructure costs by 80% through ephemeral environment automation
  • Achieved 5 nines uptime for test execution platform
  • Scaled to support unlimited concurrent test environments
  • Customer security first approach to environment provisioning

Key Challenges:

  • Managing deployment state across ephemeral resources
  • Ensuring test isolation and security in multi-tenant environment
  • Optimising Terraform execution times for large-scale deployments

Comprehensive Infrastructure Consolidation

Led a major infrastructure modernisation, consolidating the virtual server estate by over 70% through containerisation, DBaaS adoption, and automation with Ansible. Delivered a scalable, self-monitoring platform integrating proprietary Oracle application clustering, Prometheus, Grafana OSS, Loki, Traefik and Uptime Kuma to enhance reliability, observability, and operational efficiency.

Technologies:

DockerTraefikOracle DBaaSAnsiblePrometheusGrafanaLokiUptime KumaGitHub Actions

Role: Lead Architect (DevOps and Infrastructure)

Key Wins:

  • Consolidated server estate by 70%, reducing operational overhead
  • Significantly improved deployment times by 50%, reducing downtime for a business critical application
  • Achieved order of magnitude reduction in environment provisioning times

Key Challenges:

  • Migration of legacy Oracle DBs to DBaaS was complex and time consuming
  • Integrating multiple monitoring tools into unified platform
  • The project required upskilling and cultural transformation to embed DevOps practices

CIOJoy – CIO-as-a-Service

Conceptualised and developed CIOJoy, a business model offering fractional and interim CIO services as a fixed-price product. The model enables organisations to access strategic technology leadership, governance, and automation-driven transformation expertise without the overhead of a full-time executive hire.

Technologies:

AWSPostgreSQLNext.jsVercelTerraformGrafanaGitHub ActionsHubSpotQuickBooksCursorGoogle Workspace

Role: Founder & Principal Consultant

Key Wins:

  • Developed a scalable service framework for delivering CIO and technology leadership services as a subscription product
  • Created repeatable playbooks for IT strategy, infrastructure modernisation, and digital transformation delivery
  • Defined governance and reporting models using automation and observability principles drawn from SRE practices
  • Established a modular pricing and engagement structure balancing accessibility for SMEs with enterprise-grade expertise

Key Challenges:

  • Productising traditionally bespoke CIO advisory services into a standardised, outcome-based offering
  • Balancing strategic leadership deliverables with operational execution capacity
  • Building trust and demonstrating value to clients unfamiliar with fractional CIO models
  • Integrating automation, observability, and data-driven reporting into an executive consulting framework
